About “FREE TERMINALS”
Throughout the country, merchants are being inundated with offers of '"FREE TERMINALS" from bankcard representatives. Are these terminals which sometimes sell for in excess of $800 really free? What many merchants should ask is: "How is this bank going to recoup the investment?” Many “Free Terminal” programs employ some or all of the following strategies:
- Annual Fee. This fee usually starts at $79 and can rise from there. At a minimum you will be paying $237 in additional fees in a three year period compared to a processor with no annual fee.
- Termination Fee. This can vary from $250 to several thousand dollars. Even if you pay the termination fee, you may not be able to keep the terminal.
- Protected Programming. The operating software of the terminal can be configured for proprietary use. It can be very difficult if not impossible to reprogram a Free Terminal for use with a competing processor.
- Higher Fees. Very often merchants will pay additional hidden fees. These fees routinely are $25 to $100 or more per month higher than comparable rates. At this pace, payoff to the processor can occur in just a few months.
